Parish LeagueParish League 2009 Result of Final Team 1 (Ciaran Maher) 3-7 Team 5 (Barry Morrissey) 2-8 Congratulations to Ciaran Maher's team who produced a stirring comeback to win the final and to Bryan Fitzgerald of the winning team who was named Man of the Match in the final. Barry Morrissey's team had played with the aid of the wind in the first half and led at half time by 2-5 to 2 points. A point blank save in deflecting the ball over the bar by Lato Slattery in goal for Ciaran Mahers team would later prove to be invaluable. Team 5 began the second half in similar mood to the first half and scored two early points from Kenny Coffey and Stephen Morgan. Johnny Cooney got a goal and a few points back for Ciaran Mahers team but Team 5 were still holding out. In the last five mins of the match Team 1 made a number of switches with Bryan & Mark Fitzgerald now operating in attack along with Lato Slattery who had come out of goals. They got a 2nd goal to bring them right back into contention but were still one point adrift entering injury time when Lato Slattery fired home a goal to put his side in the lead by two points. Barry Morrissey's team mounted one last attack but it was saved by Bryan Fitzgerald who had now gone back into goal and John McConigley sounded the final whistle. Afterwards Ciaran Maher received the Parish League shield from John O'Gorman Club Chairman and both the winning and runner up teams received medals. The winning team was Ciaran Maher(Captain), Bryan Fitzgerald, Brian Reidy, Colm Flynn, Enda Kendrick, Eamonn Gleeson, Gary Coffey, Ian Byrne, Johnny Cooney, Liam Magill, Mark Fitzgerald & Pat (Lato) Slattery There ends our clubs football parish league for 2009 which was undecided until the last few seconds. Overall we believe the league was an outstanding success with 57 players taking part. The selection committee which divided up the parish league teams also chose an "All star" team of the parish league as follows; Goalkeeper - Pat (Lato) Slattery, Defenders - Mark Fitzgerald, Brendan Magill & Paddy Gilmurray, Midfield - David Fox & Ciaran Maher, Forwards - Paddy O'Neill, John Whelan & Barry Morrissey A special thank you to John Mc Conigley, Tom O'Donnell (Cahir) & Pat Fitzgerald (Fr. Sheehy's) for refereeing the parish league. Final Team 5 (Barry Morrissey) V Team 1 (Ciaran Maher) Takes place on Sunday 10 May as the centerpiece of Lá na gClub celebrations which will begin at 2pm Semi Finals Team 5 (Barry Morrissey) 6-13 Team 3 (Martin Burke) 2-6 The absence of Brendan and Colin Magill was a blow for Team 3 in their quest for a final place but team 5 were also missing players with both teams fielding at 8 a side. 3 goals and at least 2 points from team captain Barry Morrissey led the way for team 5 and they caused an upset by gaining a place in the final. Team 1 (Ciaran Maher) 2-6 Team 4 (Liam Murray) 0-7 Team 4 will rue some missed chances from this game but they were never allowed to play with their normal fluency by Team 1 who were clinical in their finishing and defended stubbornly with an outstanding interception by Mark Fitzgerald being vital. Team 1 also welcomed back Colm Flynn to action and his presence was a factor in their win. Semi Finals & Final The draw for the semi finals took place following the completion of Round 4 and was drawn as follows; Saturday 9 May 7.15pm Team 5 (Barry Morrissey) V Team 3 (Martin Burke) Saturday 9 May 8.00pm Team 4 (Liam Murray) V Team 1 (Ciaran Maher) The final will take place on Sunday 10 May as part of the club's activities to celebrate 125 of the GAA. Round 5 With the semi final line up decided and having lost one week to the weather, Round 5 will not be played. Round 4 The postponed round 4 was played on Monday 4 May. In the first game, Team 1 (Ciaran Maher) were always in control against Team 5 (Barry Morrissey) and ran out 12 point winners in the end. This meant that Team 2 (John O'Gorman) had a chance to jump into the fourth and final semi final place with a victory over Team 4 (Liam Murray). A losing bonus point would also have been enough to see them move into fourth place. In the end Team 4 (Liam Murray) ran out comprehensive winners eliminating John O'Gormans team from the competition. Round 3 Team 4 (Liam Murray) still lead the table on 6 points despite not playing in Round 3. They have been joined on 6 points by Team 3 (Martin Burke) following their pulsating one point victory over Team 1 (Ciarán Maher). However, the losing bonus point picked up by Team 1 leaves them clear in third place on 4 points. Two goals from Tommy Dunlee helped Team 5 (Barry Morrissey) to their first win in the tournament when they defeated Team 2 (John O'Gorman) but they might well regret allowing Team 2 pick up another losing bonus point when the semi final places are finalised. Round 2 Team 4 captained by Liam Murray lead the table with a maximum of 6 points followed by Team 1 captained by Ciarán Maher who took the three points from their only game to date. Team 3 captained by Martin Burke are in third place followed by Team 2 captained by John O'Gorman. Team 5 captained by Barry Morrissey have yet to gain a point and prop up the table. Round 1 Team 4 captained by Liam Murray lead the table on score difference as a result of a comprehensive 13 point win over Team 5 captained by Barry Morrissey. 2 goals and a point from Brendan Magill helped Team 3 captained by Martin Burke to 2nd place in the table with a 7 point win over Team 2 captained by John O'Gorman who did manage to pick up what could be a vital bonus point.
